Its capital is the city of Grevena. Much of the prefecture is mountainous. According to the 2001 Greek census, Grevena is the least densely populated and third-least populous prefecture in Greece. It was created in 1967 out of the old Grevena-Kozani prefecture in which the capital was Kozani.
