Carl De Keyzer took the journey East to photograph the former gulags, or prison camps, of Siberia. He photographed what he was allowed to see: a 15-year-old boy serving three-and-a-half years for stealing two hamsters from a pet shop, and the mother who stole 12 cabbages and got four years.
